Commemorative Plates

Commemorative platesCommemorative plates can be made for any occasion for example birth, birthday, engagement, marriage, retirement etc

You can design your own plate and email a picture of it to us or simply choose one based on one of our tried and tested designs.

The plates are hand thrown and slip decorated using traditional techniques perfected by the Stoke-on-Trent potters prior to the Industrial Revolution. The most celebrated slipware potter was one Thomas Toft of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent who perfected slip decorating in the late 1600s.

The technique involves applying a white slip to the plate and then leaving it for 10 minutes to dry off. Then the decoration is applied using a tube connected to a rubber bulb full of coloured slip. It’s a little bit like drawing with tomato ketchup! Once the slip has been “trailed” on then the plate is left to dry for a day, then coloured slips can be painted on. After decorating, the plates are then high fired to stoneware temperatures to ensure a very hard wearing finish.

Commemorative Plates – Prices & Timescales

Plates cost approximately £60.00 + postage and packing, but this can vary depending upon your design.

Once the final design is agreed between us, the process of throwing, firing, decorating and glazing the plate takes about 4 – 6 weeks depending on kiln usage.
